We started planting in our greenhouses in March. In order to have a plethora of plants, we start first in the perennial house. Then we move to the dish gardens, hanging baskets, vegetables and annuals.
**The greenhouses are closed, as of July 1st. They will reopen in the spring.**
We plant thousands of various perennials and annuals. Each one is hand planted. Once the plant is in the proper soil and pot size, watered in well, we wait for the sun to do it's job.
Watering/Irrigation System
With our irrigation system, watering is made easier, though most plants are still hand watered. Each plant has their own, let's say "tastes". Some drink very little, loving the dry soil. Others can't get enough water.
When you visit the greenhouses you'll see black tubing running across the ceiling and down to various areas. From this tubing, you'll see thin black tubing/lines running down with silver "bells" on the end. The thin lines are put into the hanging baskets to help with the watering. The bells have holes in them to evenly disburse the water to the plant. Even with this help, we still check each plant, and if necessary, hand water.
In summer, temperatures in the greenhouses can easily skyrocket up to 100 degrees. The greenhouses are automated. The heating and cooling is accomplished by thermostats. However, with the sun coming through the plastic, it's still very hot. We always check the dryness of the plants mid afternoon. Many of you probably have seen us in the greenhouse watering.
Watering is one of the most important jobs. Knowing what the plants need, depending on the heat/temperature, is crucial to the success of our greenhouse.,
At Wilson's we have planted it, nurtured it, so we have the knowledge to help you with your plant choices.
